Shingle Ratings 1, 2, 3, and 4 Explained: What Charlotte Homeowners Should Buy
Class 1, 2, 3, and 4 on asphalt shingles are UL 2218 hail-impact ratings — Class 4 is the highest — and for most Charlotte homeowners buying a new asphalt roof, a Class 4 architectural shingle is the rating worth specifying. These numbers are not fire ratings, not wind ratings, and not a 1-to-4 quality score. A Class 4 shingle passed the highest-energy version of that laboratory steel-ball test; Class 1–3 passed only lower-energy versions. It is still not hail-proof, and some North Carolina insurers may offer a premium credit for a documented Class 4 roof — confirm that with your agent before you buy.
The rating only describes how that shingle performed in one lab test. Real storms throw hail of different sizes, hardness, and angles, plus wind-driven debris. Installation, roof pitch, decking, and whether the ridge and starter pieces are also impact-rated all change how a roof actually holds up. That is why two "Class 4" bids can still be different jobs, and why the spec sheet is only the start of what you should look at.
What UL 2218 Class 1–4 actually measures
UL 2218 is Underwriters Laboratories' standard for impact resistance of prepared steep-slope roof coverings — shingles, tiles, and similar overlapping products. In the test, steel balls are dropped onto a sample at vulnerable spots (edges, corners, unsupported areas). The product is hit twice in nearly the same place. To pass a class, it must show no tearing, fracturing, or cracking through the shingle that is visible from the underside.
Surface granule loss or a cosmetic dent on the face can still be a pass. The test is looking for a break that would let water through, not a roof that looks untouched.
Class 1 vs. Class 2 vs. Class 3 vs. Class 4
Independent testing summaries of UL 2218 (including published work from Haag Engineering / IIBEC) describe the four classes this way:

Class 4 is the one to ask for if you want the highest rating this standard offers. Class 1–3 products exist, and many everyday architectural shingles are not marketed with a UL 2218 class at all. "Impact resistant" in a brochure is not the same as a printed UL 2218 Class 4 listing.
Do not confuse this with 3-tab shingles. Three-tab is an older, thinner shingle style — not Class 3.
Important limit: steel balls are not hail
UL's own standard states there is no established direct correlation between steel-ball results and every real hailstone. Steel is denser than ice; the test is a repeatable comparison, not a promise that a 2-inch hailstone will leave your roof unharmed.
A related lab method, ANSI FM 4473, uses ice balls instead of steel and uses the same Class 1–4 labels. You may see either standard on a spec sheet. When you compare shingles, you will see several different "classes." They are not interchangeable.
A shingle can be fire Class A, wind Class H, and impact Class 4 at the same time — or only some of those. Read the spec sheet line by line.
What Charlotte homeowners should look at before they buy
Use this as a checklist, not a sales script.
1. The UL 2218 class on the spec sheet. Ask for the product name and the class in writing. If the bid only says "architectural" or "impact resistant," that is not enough.
2. Matching accessories. Field shingles, ridge cap, hip, and starter are different pieces. A Class 4 field shingle with non-rated ridge cap is not a full Class 4 covering. Ask whether the system is Class 4, not only the shingle you see from the street.
3. Wind and fire listings for the same product — typically Class A fire and a published wind classification on premium architectural lines.
4. Your insurer, before installation. Some North Carolina carriers offer a credit for a documented Class 4 roof; others do not, and the amount and paperwork vary. 5. The rest of the roof system. Class rating does not replace tear-off, underlayment, flashing, and ventilation. Poor ventilation and reused flashing fail expensive roofs every year in this climate.

Does Class 4 cost more, and is it worth it here?
Class 4 architectural shingles typically cost more than a standard architectural line on the same roof. What does a Class 4 shingle rating mean? It means the shingle passed the UL 2218 Class 4 steel-ball impact test — a 2-inch ball dropped from 20 feet, twice in the same area — without a through-crack visible from the underside. It is the highest class in that standard.
Is a Class 4 roof hail-proof? No. UL 2218 is a laboratory comparison using steel balls. Large hail, repeated hits, and wind-driven debris can still damage a Class 4 roof. The rating improves resistance; it does not eliminate storm damage.

Does every piece of the roof need to be Class 4? If you want a Class 4 covering, ask that field shingles and the matching ridge, hip, and starter products be Class 4 as well. A mixed system is not the same as a Class 4 roof covering.
Should I get Class 4 or metal instead? They solve different problems. Class 4 asphalt is still an asphalt roof with a typical architectural lifespan.
